Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid Qurban is the second most important festival in the Islamic calendar celebrated worldwide. The yearly festival is celebrated on the tenth day of Islamic month Dhu al-Hijjah when people across the globe travel to Mecca to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. As per the Gregorian calendar, the dates shift approximately 11 days earlier each year. This year Eid-al-Adha will be celebrated on July 31.
This day is celebrated to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael on Allah’s command. However, it is believed that before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, Allah provided a lamb to sacrifice instead. In honour of this intervention, every year the Muslim community sacrifice and animal, mostly sheep on this day. From the same reason, Eid al-Adha is also known as the “Festival of the Sacrifice”. The sacrificed animal is divided into three shares- one for the poor, another is kept for home, and the third for relatives.
